Got a dedicated server at Softlayer. Performance is almost flawless rigt from the start. Any problem, big or small is dealt with quickly by tech support, who are helpful and knowledgeable. Although the price is on the high side compared to other webhosts but you get what you pay for, that is quality service. Highly recommended.
I bought 2 servers from SoftLayer last year and I am very happy with their service so far. Excellent support and minimum downtime. Never had any major issues with the servers. The best thing about SoftLayer is the control panel. It's just amazing how powerful it is and how much stuff you can monitor and control over the CP. The interface is easy to use too.
I recently switched from ThePlanet to Softlayer, and strongly prefer Softlayer. Support has been great, my server is perfect, and I've ended up with a much better deal than I had at ThePlanet - faster (quality) hardware for about half what I had been paying. The free upgrade from 1GB to 2GB of RAM was great as well. The customer portal, free automated OS reloads, and other nice tools have been great so far as well.
We have being Softlayer for few month now since around 09/04/2008.
We got the server at first for high bandwith client until he could get is server upgrade completed as he colo's is server elsewhere need a temp solution we no longer host is site but still kept server for other clients after all SL did for us we would never think of leaving.
We deployed site and then we ran into problems server seemed become unresponsive after a few hours.
We explained this to SL and did chasis swap and got us back online but problem remained and did not charge for os reload or chasis and even upgrade connection to make sure we not bottlenecks stoping from serving content.
After they started looking apache and using information for original server config had at other datacenter and found solutions that solved issues.
Billing dept and support dept as being of great assistance when needed them.
Overall we very pleased with SL and would not look elsewhere for quality provider and pricing for what we are getting is very reasonable.
Well, where do I begin? There are just many things I want to talk about Softlayer that just amaze me.
Firstly, I went to SoftLayer 4 years ago, with the hope to finally set my footsteps on this host and to permanently stay there, and I can honestly say this was be BEST decision I have EVER made in my life.
I would like to start off with the Servers I have with them. I have a total of 18 servers with them. Some of the server details are:
Servers 1, 3, 7, 12, 17:
Intel Xeon E7320
16 x 2.13GHz
4 x 8MB
16 GB DDR2 667 ECC (I upgraded from 8 GB RAM)
Servers 2, 4, 5, 9, 11:
AMD Opteron 8350
16 x 2.00GHz
16 x 512k
16 GB DDR2 667 ECC (I upgraded from 8 GB RAM)
Well, above are some of my servers.
I have literally NEVER had any trouble with my servers, except for about 1 year back, one of my servers was giving me problems (My AMD Server), which was hardware problems and it was resolved under 15 minutes! I was totally amazed.. really amazed. This goes to show how great their support it, truly great!
I also have 1000 MBPS Port linked to each of my servers and my websites are VERY fast as well. A lot of my clients ask me how my servers are very fast... and I tell them, SoftLayer does the job for me and is well worth spending the money.
I honestly recommend SoftLayer to all! And plus, I like their new revamped website as well.
We moved from our old dedicated server provider I believe back in November, 2008 to SoftLayer and we have been very happy ever since.
Our servers have not seen a minute of network downtime and are always fast and available. The thing I like most about SoftLayer is their management portal which is absolutely excellent! You can do just about anything you could imagine from setting rDNS, SWIPing your own IPs, to changing your OS installation on the server etc...
SoftLayer also offers IPMI (KVM over IP) with all of their servers which has been an amazingly useful tool. SoftLayer is a bit more expensive than other providers out there but in my experience they are *well* worth the money.
If you are looking for a dedicated server provider, SoftLayer would be my very first recommendation!
